Why it Matters

Tooth decay plays into eating, speech, self-esteem, sleep and can stop us doing things that we usually enjoy.

Tooth Decay...

  • Affects 1 in 4 five year olds
  • Causes 3 missed school days per child p.a.
  • Is the leading cause of hospital admission for children
  • In children makes them 4 x more likely to develop decay as an adult

Parents and guardians of children experiencing oral discomfort often feel guilty, upset, and frustrated that they can’t immediately take away their children’s pain. Poor oral health in childhood can also have a lifelong impact; children with decay in their primary teeth are four times more likely to then develop decay in their adult teeth.

Let's work together to help children build healthy habits that can serve them for a lifetime.

When several teeth are affected by decay, children often need to undergo general anaesthetic in hospital in order to treat this dental issue. Did you know that in England, dental treatment is the most common reason for children undergoing general anaesthetic? This treatment in hospitals cost the NHS more than £50 million between 2015 and 2016.

In the Oral Health Survey of five-year-olds in 2022 it was reported that more than 1 in 4 children by the age of 5 years old already experience tooth decay. Worryingly, of these children, they have on average between 3 and 4 affected teeth. The survey of three-year-olds found that 11% have visible tooth decay affecting their front teeth.

Let’s work together to tackle this problem and empower children to proactively look after their oral wellbeing.
